Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has selected a consortium of Tecnicas Reunidas and Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering to carry out the front-end engineering design (FEED) for a major green hydrogen and ammonia project in Yanbu, according to industry sources. The initiative will feature 4 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity, with the goal of generating 400,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen could be converted into green ammonia. Supporting infrastructure will include a seawater desalination facility and an export terminal, while plans for solar and wind power are also part of the broader project scope.

The FEED contract is scheduled for completion within 10 months, with commercial operations targeted for 2030. The Ministry of Energy of Saudi Arabia is driving the development of a low-carbon hydrogen sector aimed at international markets. Other significant projects underway include a $5 billion ammonia plant led by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, which plans to use 4 gigawatts of renewable energy to produce 1.2 million tons of ammonia per year.
