Saudi Arabia has reported a major increase in potato production, with a 47% rise in 2023, reaching a self-sufficiency level of 86%. The country produced over 621,750 tons of potatoes, a significant jump from 423,770 tons in 2021.
This achievement was made possible by cultivating more than 17,000 hectares of land with potatoes in 2023, compared to 15,890 hectares in 2021. This boost in potato production has positively influenced the manufacturing sector, encouraging investments and the adoption of advanced technologies. In total, vegetable production reached 3.21 million tons in 2023, a 19% increase since 2020.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture attributes this success to strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing self-sufficiency, attracting investments, and offering financial support, including higher financing rates for technology-driven projects. The agricultural sector’s contribution to GDP is noteworthy, amounting to SAR 109 billion (USD 29.07 billion).
By focusing on local production and reducing import dependency, the ministry is working towards the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to diversify the national economy.
