The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is at the forefront of advancing environmental sustainability in Saudi Arabia, underscoring the nation’s dedication to combating climate change. SGI Day, celebrated on March 27, commemorates the Kingdom’s progress in ecological preservation both locally and regionally.
Launched in 2021, the SGI has initiated 86 programs and projects with investments over SAR 705 billion, targeting various green economy sectors. This initiative aligns with Vision 2030’s goals to reduce carbon emissions, enhance afforestation, and conserve land and marine ecosystems, ultimately aiming for a sustainable economy and improved living standards.
Achievements in Afforestation and Land Restoration
SGI’s efforts have led to the planting of over 115 million trees and the rehabilitation of 118,000 hectares of degraded land. The long-term plan includes planting 10 billion trees and restoring 74 million hectares over the coming decades.
Carbon Emission Reduction and Renewable Energy
Reducing carbon emissions is a primary focus, with a target of cutting 278 million tons annually by 2030. Saudi Arabia has added 6.6 gigawatts of renewable energy to its grid, with projects underway to expand this to 44.2 gigawatts. In 2024, new projects with a 20-gigawatt capacity were launched, aiming for a power mix of 50% natural gas and 50% renewable energy by 2030.
Conservation and Wildlife Protection
Biodiversity conservation is key, with efforts to protect 30% of the Kingdom’s land and marine areas. Currently, 18.1% of terrestrial and 6.49% of marine areas are safeguarded. Additionally, over 7,000 endangered species, such as the Arabian oryx and ibex, have been reintroduced into nature reserves.
Saudi Arabia continues to play a significant role in global climate action, implementing substantial sustainability projects through SGI. These initiatives support the Kingdom’s broader goals of economic diversification and sustainable development, setting a benchmark for environmental leadership worldwide.
