Shanghai Electric has joined forces with Masdar, the Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company, to develop the Al Sadawi Solar Photovoltaic Project in Saudi Arabia. This initiative is part of the Kingdom’s National Renewable Energy Programme, Round 5, which aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s energy sources and increase its renewable capacity, according to Shanghai Electric.
The Al Sadawi project, located in the Sadawi Region, will be Shanghai Electric’s largest photovoltaic engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) project to date. The contract was awarded in November 2024 to a consortium led by Masdar, which includes China’s GD Power and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), as reported by Shanghai Electric.
A Power Purchase Agreement was signed with the Saudi Power Procurement Company under a build, own, and operate model. Shanghai Electric states that commercial operations are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027.
This collaboration highlights the increasing international partnerships driving growth in the Middle East’s solar energy sector.
