Shanghai Electric has entered into major renewable energy agreements with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and Oman’s Mawarid Group, focusing on expanding clean energy initiatives in Saudi Arabia and Oman.
According to GlobalData Strategic Intelligence, the collaboration with Masdar centers on building a 2GW solar power plant in Saudi Arabia, named the Sadawi project. This facility—Shanghai Electric’s largest solar EPC project to date—will cover 40 square kilometers, generate over six billion kilowatt-hours annually, and is projected to supply electricity to 700,000 homes while reducing carbon emissions by three million tonnes. The project will use advanced photovoltaic technology to harness Saudi Arabia’s solar resources and forms a key part of the nation’s renewable energy strategy.
In Oman, Shanghai Electric and Mawarid Group are partnering to develop wind energy projects.
Both projects reflect the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and Oman Vision 2040, emphasizing sustainability, local engagement, and technological collaboration. Wu Lei, Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, described the agreements as a significant milestone for the company’s presence in the Middle East’s renewable sector. Masdar CEO His Excellency Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi highlighted the importance of deepening cooperation in wind, solar, and energy storage to accelerate the global shift towards clean energy.
These partnerships are expected to drive regional energy diversification, foster knowledge exchange, and contribute to global efforts in reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
