ACWA Power and Bapco Energies have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to build a large-scale solar power facility with battery storage in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, according to the companies. The project is designed as a cross-border clean energy initiative to supply electricity to Bahrain.
Under the agreement, the partners plan to develop a solar complex of up to 2.8 GW in several phases, according to the companies. All generated power will be exported to Bapco Energies’ load center in the Kingdom of Bahrain, supporting its electricity needs and advancing its renewable energy goals.
ACWA Power’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Raad Al Saady, said the collaboration underscores the strong relationship between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and supports both Saudi Vision 2030 and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030. He emphasized that the project is intended to enhance regional energy security, expand clean power, and help reduce emissions.
Mark Thomas, Group CEO of Bapco Energies, described the deal as a significant milestone in Bahrain’s strategy to diversify its energy mix. He noted that partnering with ACWA Power is expected to bolster long-term energy security and tap into the wider potential of renewable resources in the region.
The initiative aligns with the Bahrain National Energy Strategy, which prioritizes higher energy efficiency, wider adoption of renewables, and reliable, competitively priced power. It is also anticipated to reinforce energy cooperation within the Gulf Cooperation Council.
For ACWA Power, the JDA further broadens its global renewable energy portfolio and strengthens its position as a leading player in the regional energy transition.
