The Maaden Bauxite and Alumina Company, a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabian Mining Company, has entered a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement with Emerge, a partnership between Masdar and EDF, according to the Associated Press. This deal will bring a solar power project to the Al Baitha Bauxite Mine, providing renewable energy and supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 for sustainability and reduced carbon emissions.
The planned solar facility will feature an 8 MWp photovoltaic array and a 30 MWh battery storage system, ensuring a steady supply of electricity around the clock. Annually, it is projected to produce about 17,300 MWh of electricity and cut CO₂ emissions by roughly 13,800 tonnes—a reduction comparable to taking more than 3,000 cars off the road each year.
Leaders from Maaden, Emerge, Masdar, and EDF emphasized the partnership’s role in advancing renewable energy and lowering the mining sector’s carbon footprint. Emerge will oversee all aspects of the project, from financing to ongoing maintenance, delivering a fully integrated sustainable energy solution.
