Saudi Arabia is undertaking the world’s largest storage procurement process, aiming for 2 GW/8 GWh of storage capacity.
In a significant move towards renewable energy, Saudi Arabia has set ambitious targets to enhance its generation capacity, aspiring to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.
The Saudi Power Procurement Company’s Initiative
The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) is initiating the qualification of bidders for four major grid-scale battery projects, collectively offering 8 GWh of storage capacity throughout the Kingdom. This initiative represents the first phase of Saudi Arabia’s battery storage program, which supports the objective of sourcing 50% of its energy from renewables by 2030.
Each storage facility, rated at 500 MW, is designed to operate for four hours, delivering a total power capacity of 2,000 MWh.
