Saudi Arabia’s Industrial Sector Targets Green Energy Transition
Deputy Minister of Industry Affairs, Eng. Khalil Ibrahim bin Salamah, recently emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to becoming a frontrunner in the transition towards green energy within the industrial sector. This initiative falls under the broad objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly solutions, Saudi Arabia is accelerating its move towards sustainable energy, particularly in its chemical industries.
Bin Salamah discussed these ambitions during a dialogue session titled “Overcoming the global challenge of transitioning towards green energy in the chemical industry,” hosted at the ACHEMA exhibition in Germany. He underscored the Kingdom’s dedication to sustainable practices and renewable energy as a means to foster economic diversification, create job opportunities, and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2060.
He highlighted the pivotal role of major Saudi projects like “NEOM,” which is centered on renewable energy, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing methods. These efforts are instrumental in enhancing economic diversity and furthering sustainability goals. Bin Salamah also mentioned the Saudi Green Initiative, aiming to plant 10 billion trees to mitigate carbon emissions and to boost the share of renewables in the national energy portfolio to over 50% by 2030.
Further, he spoke on the strategic objectives for the development of Saudi’s industrial sector in alignment with Vision 2030’s aims. Emphasizing the need for localizing the industry and crafting flexible, innovative supply chains, he stressed these are key to accomplishing the targets of the National Strategy for Industry.
“Within Vision 2030’s framework, we aspire to lead globally in the realms of industrial innovation and sustainability,” Bin Salamah stated. “By addressing challenges for investors and offering necessary incentives and facilities, we aim to fulfill the National Strategy for Industry’s objectives and embed the latest technologies and sustainable practices into the sector.”
The ACHEMA 2024 exhibition is a prominent event that gathers over 3,200 industrial companies and features roughly 1,000 speakers. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, the exhibition explores a variety of topics across numerous industries, including pharmaceuticals, hydrogen, and both green and digital advancements. Key issues such as sustainability and digital transformation, alongside the latest technological innovations, are central themes at the event.
