The United States and Saudi Arabia are preparing to sign a preliminary deal to collaborate on developing a civil nuclear program, according to US Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Speaking in Riyadh after meeting with His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Minister of Energy, Secretary Wright emphasized that both nations are working towards a partnership that aligns with their shared goals.
Details of the memorandum outlining this energy cooperation are expected later this year. Secretary Wright noted that any US involvement in Saudi Arabia’s nuclear sector would require a 123 agreement, as mandated by the US Atomic Energy Act of 1954, to ensure safe and regulated collaboration.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, aims to diversify its energy sources and lower emissions in line with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 initiative. Nuclear energy is anticipated to play a significant role in these efforts, supporting the kingdom’s transition to cleaner energy.
