Saudi Arabia has successfully conducted the first test run of a hydrogen train in the Middle East, according to Dr. Bashar Al-Malik, CEO of the Saudi Railway Company. This achievement aligns with the Kingdom’s commitment to environmentally friendly technologies. Dr. Al-Malik shared these insights during the Global Logistics Forum 2024 in Riyadh.
Previously, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announced plans for the region’s first hydrogen-powered train. Dr. Al-Malik emphasized ongoing efforts to expand the railway network, aiming to connect new destinations and economic zones, thus supporting various sectors across the Kingdom. He noted Saudi Arabia’s proactive approach in evaluating hydrogen technology for commercial use.
Frank Hagemeier, CEO of Siemens Mobility in Saudi Arabia, highlighted digitization as a key driver for railways, enhancing operations through faster processes and reduced costs. This digital shift benefits both public and private sector operators.
Conor Fegan, Secretary General of the European Rail Freight Association, remarked on the necessity of integrating rail freight within regional and international frameworks, akin to other shipping methods.
During another session, Agility Vice Chairman Tarek Sultan underscored the importance of flexibility in logistics, stressing the sector’s need to adapt to rapid changes and leverage innovation for global leadership.
The inaugural Global Logistics Forum brought together leaders, experts, and innovators to explore transformative solutions for the logistics sector. The event featured participation from ministers, officials, and industry leaders, with contributions from 130 speakers and 80 exhibitors representing 30 countries.
