WeRide has become the first company to receive approval for operating autonomous robotaxis in Saudi Arabia, with initial trials set to launch in Riyadh. The project is a collaboration with Uber and Ai Driver, aiming for full commercial service by year’s end, according to company statements.
This marks Saudi Arabia’s debut in autonomous taxi pilots, as no such permits had been issued before. WeRide also stands out globally as the first technology company to secure autonomous driving permits in six countries: China, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, France, the United States, and now Saudi Arabia.
Uber continues its involvement in the growing robotaxi sector, partnering in both the pilot and anticipated commercial rollout. Jennifer Li, Chief Financial Officer and Head of International at WeRide, described the new permit as a significant milestone for the company’s global growth and commercial prospects in Saudi Arabia.
WeRide’s ambitions extend beyond robotaxis; plans are underway to introduce robobus services in the country. The company is already operating autonomous Robosweeper S1 sanitation vehicles at King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh.
Recent expansions include robotaxi operations in California, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai, with further plans to enter 15 more cities over the next five years. This rapid progress places WeRide ahead of competitors such as Waymo and Tesla in global robotaxi deployment.
