The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) hosted the second Multilateral Industrial Policy Forum (MIPF 2024) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, focusing on AI, digitalization, and automation in manufacturing. The event also addressed the global energy transition and the creation of sustainable and resilient supply chains to enhance local value and job opportunities.
UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller emphasized that the world will be shaped by mega-trends such as population growth and resource scarcity by 2050. He stated that industry plays a crucial role in offering solutions through sustainable industrialization and innovative technologies, which can drive economic growth and combat poverty.
During the opening ceremony, HRH Abdulaziz Bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, delivered a keynote speech. Bandar Al-Khorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, highlighted the significance of industrial development in achieving the country’s “Vision 2030” for economic diversification. He stressed the importance of adapting to global changes, asserting that Saudi Arabia is building manufacturing for the future.
A Joint Declaration was signed by Director General Müller and Minister Al-Khorayef, marking a new Strategic Partnership between UNIDO and Saudi Arabia. This collaboration aims to drive innovation and sustainable industrialization through new projects.
The Forum, attended by over 3,000 participants from various sectors, addressed the need for strong industrial policy frameworks. It explored how nations can develop competitive industries ready for the future, through discussions at Ministerial and High-Level Round Tables and various sessions.
An exhibition showcased the progress of Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030,” highlighting AI-driven solutions and sustainable energy transitions. This demonstrated the critical role of industrial policy in fostering resilience and a sustainable future.
